A Dionüszosz-kultuszban pajzs helyett virággal diszített bot : a thürszosz és a gyilkos szerszámok, a dárda, a tőr helyettfáklya került a táncosok kezébe. A hellenisztikus időkben feloldódnak a klasszikus formák. Görögtáncosok Kisázsiába, Alexandriába és Itáliába kerülve kifejlesztik apantomimet, s amikor a rómaiak i. e. 146-ban Archaia néven provinciává teszik Görögországot, már régen folyik a görög táncosok Rómába vitele. Ebből a korból két tánctörténeti munka is fennmaradt, egyiket az alexandriai Athenaios, a másikat a szír Lukianosz írta görög nyelven.Az előbbi 600 görög tánc nevét közli."
